Summers County Performing Arts: Christmas Recital by Students
In Hinton, West Virginia, a vibrant scene of musical talent was on full display on Sunday. Summers County Performing Arts hosted a remarkable recital where piano and voice students showcased their skills in a performance titled “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” Under the guidance of the experienced teacher Lisa Ann Colombo, students ranging from six to eighteen years old treated the audience to over forty enchanting songs.

Why Music Means a Lot

For these students, music holds great significance. As Colombo explains, it imparts crucial skills such as self-discipline, stage presence, and even mathematical concepts. We had the opportunity to speak with Piper Hickman and Harper Wiley, two of the participants. Hickman shared, "I've been performing since I was her age, so I'm a bit more at ease now compared to when I first started." Wiley added, "I'm just nine and have been involved for about two years. It gives you amazing experiences. If you're nervous around others, it helps you break out of your shell."

The Impact on Students

Participating in this performing group has had a profound impact on the students. It allows them to build confidence and express themselves through music. For instance, Hickman mentioned how performing has helped her overcome her initial stage fright. Wiley also emphasized the joy of sharing their talent with others. "It's a lot of fun," Wiley said. "You get to meet new people and make memories."

The Opportunity for All

Summers County Performing Arts welcomes students of all ages. Whether you're three or an adult, there are classes available. The second semester will commence in the first week of January, providing a great opportunity for those who wish to explore their musical abilities. You can find more details on their Facebook page. This is not just a program for a select few but an inclusive community that encourages everyone to discover the magic of music.
