Navigating the Evolving College Admissions Landscape: A Firsthand Perspective

As a former high school senior who applied to just one college in 1986, I now find myself in the unexpected role of a college admissions advisor, guiding today's students through the complex and ever-changing admissions process. The journey has been a remarkable one, filled with insights into the shifting dynamics of college selection and the growing expectations placed on young adults.

The Changing Landscape of College Applications

The college admissions landscape has undergone a significant transformation since my own high school days. Where I once applied to a single institution, today's high school seniors are navigating a vastly different reality. On average, students applied to seven schools in 2021, with those in affluent communities often applying to more than twice that number. The advent of the Common App has streamlined the process, allowing students to fill out most of their information once and then apply to up to 20 colleges with relative ease.

The Shifting Importance of Standardized Test Scores

The weight placed on standardized test scores has also evolved. What was considered a high ACT or SAT score in 1986 is now merely average. The rise of test preparation services and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic's test-optional policies have contributed to a shift in the reported mean scores, making the admissions landscape even more competitive.

The Influence of Social Media and Sports Success

The college selection process is no longer confined to the traditional factors. Today's high school seniors are exposed to a wider range of institutions, often influenced by social media trends and the success of sports teams. Influencers and viral social media challenges, such as the "Bama Rush" phenomenon, have heightened interest in certain universities, while the "Flutie Effect" has seen schools gain popularity due to the achievements of their athletic programs.

Guiding Students Through the Decision-Making Process

As a college admissions advisor, my role is to help families navigate this complex landscape. I often start by breaking down the process through the lens of game theory, analyzing the numbers and statistics for the colleges my students are interested in. This includes examining early decision rates, the percentage of freshmen classes filled by early decision, the percentage of applicants submitting standardized scores, and the differences between the scores of admitted students and entering freshmen.

Many young adults are tempted to apply to an excessive number of highly selective schools, believing that the more they apply to, the better their chances.
