In the picturesque town of South Lake Tahoe, California, a remarkable community initiative is underway to address the pressing issue of child food insecurity. Bread & Broth, a local non-profit organization, is gearing up for its annual "Cram-A-Hearse" event, a unique and creative approach to collecting much-needed food donations for the children in their care.
Nourishing Young Minds and Bodies: Bread & Broth's Mission
Bread & Broth's B&B 4 Kids program is a lifeline for children in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, providing them with nutritious weekend food bags to supplement their nutrition. These bags contain a variety of single-serving meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, as well as fresh fruit, protein bars, and healthy snacks. The program currently serves 90 children at local childcare facilities and approximately 185 children across all Lake Tahoe Unified Schools, ensuring that no child goes hungry during the weekends.
Cram-A-Hearse: A Spooktacular Food Drive
On Saturday, October 26th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Bread & Broth will be hosting its annual "Cram-A-Hearse" event in the parking lot of Grocery Outlet, located at 2358 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe. This unique food drive invites the community to come together and "cram" a hearse with much-needed food items from the B&B 4 Kids wish list. Volunteers will be dressed in Halloween costumes, adding an element of festivity to the event, and Halloween treats will be provided for children who join in the fun.
Filling the Hearse, Feeding the Hungry
The B&B 4 Kids wish list includes a variety of non-perishable, single-serving food items that are essential for the weekend food bags. These items include canned soup, canned ravioli, canned spaghetti, chili, small cans of chicken and tuna, beef jerky, mac & cheese (small instant cups), instant oatmeal packets, granola bars, fruit snacks, fruit or applesauce cups, raisins (1 oz), nuts, and crackers with cheese or peanut butter. For longer holiday vacations, the program also accepts peanut butter (16 oz), jelly (both in plastic containers), and 11 oz. boxes of cereal.
A Community Effort: Volunteers and Donations
The success of the Cram-A-Hearse event relies on the generosity and participation of the South Lake Tahoe community. Volunteers are needed to dress up in Halloween costumes and assist with the collection and organization of the donated food items. In addition to physical donations, monetary contributions are also accepted, as they allow Bread & Broth to purchase additional supplies and support the B&B 4 Kids program.
Empowering Children, Strengthening the Community
The Cram-A-Hearse event is more than just a food drive; it's a testament to the power of community collaboration and the commitment to ensuring that no child in South Lake Tahoe goes hungry. By providing these weekend food bags, Bread & Broth is not only addressing the immediate need for nourishment but also empowering children to focus on their education and personal growth, rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from.
A Spooktacular Opportunity to Make a Difference
The Cram-A-Hearse event is a unique and engaging way for the community to come together and support a worthy cause. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor to the area, your participation can make a significant impact on the lives of the children in South Lake Tahoe. So, mark your calendars, don your Halloween costumes, and join Bread & Broth on October 26th to "cram" a hearse and feed the hungry hearts of the community.
